“Art is, by definition, a selfish act; a self-indulgent act. If you start thinking about making your art to cater for the market or to please other people, you stop being an artist; you become an entertainer.”—
(drugz said) Some good points here but let’s be real, making art can also be about community, and a community can have huge potential. It’s not all selfish. And who are you to tell an entertainer that they can’t be an artist or what they’re doing isn’t art? It’s fucking ART.
(I replied) I cut off the part where he says “I’m not saying you cannot be both” which comes right after the quote I blogged. Plus, even if you create a form of art for your community, it has to be something that comes from you, that you personally believe. If you create something thinking to yourself “Aww yeah people will dig that”, then your intentions aren’t artistic per say. I’m pretty sure that’s what Steven Wilson meant to say as well.

“The really frustrating thing about the “Save the boobies” campaign and similar ones is that it gets it exactly backward. Often, the point of breast cancer treatment is to destroy some or all of the boobies in order to save the woman.
Saying that we should work to cure this disease because it threatens breasts is really upsetting. For starters, it suggests that women are worth saving because they’re attached to breasts, rather than the other way around. But worse, it tells any woman who’s had a life-saving mastectomy that she’s given up the thing that made people care about her survival. What a punch in the stomach.”
So… my 2 favourite actors from the Japanese zombie movie Versus both starred in Kamen Rider series, and I had no idea until very recently. Why did I not start watching these shows earlier? Oh god have-I missed out.
Kenji Matsuda almost makes the whole Versus experience worth it by himself. He is a brilliant actor in his own way. I just love his attitude, and him being part of the Kamen Rider Kiva series makes me want to watch it through even more. I sure do hope his character Jiro plays an important part throughout the whole series.
My pal Chocolate Infinity suggested a while ago that I should get into the Kamen Rider fever with Kamen Rider Kabuto. I had absolutely no idea I would see one of my favourite Japanese action actor in there! And he’s a badass bad guy, too! Tak Sakaguchi surprised me in episode 41 when he appeared and kicked everyone’s favourites’ asses no problem. This just made my day.
Unfortunately, now it means that I have to side with the bad guys and have my hopes and dreams crushed once my ol’ friend Tak is defeated by the good guys :(
These movies, all starring Tak Sakaguchi, are all worth seeing despite the distinct absence of depth*. They’re just pure enjoyable entertainment. Sakaguchi is the main guy in Versus and Death Trance, and he plays secondary characters in Alive and Shinobi. He’s a pretentious asshole, and I love him for it.
*Alive is the exception here; the only movie I mentioned with something to deliver aside from brainless action scenes.
